Bazi Compatibility: What Two Charts Can Tell You
An article can only give you the general rule. The decision in front of you is specific, and the gap between the two is usually measured in months of not acting.
Cast a free chart, hold this method against your own situation, and see what can move and what should be left alone.
Compatibility in Bazi is not a percentage and does not produce a verdict. Two charts are compared across sixteen characters, and what the comparison yields is a map: which areas are likely to run smoothly, and which are likely to take work. The animal pair everyone starts with is one signal out of sixteen, and it is routinely outweighed by what the day pillars are doing. The output worth having is not compatible or incompatible — it is knowing that the friction will sit in money, or in family, or in pace, so you can talk about that specific thing before it becomes the argument you keep having.

Before looking at either chart, write down the one topic you already avoid discussing. Then see whether the reading lands anywhere near it.
Watch the trap
The common mistake is expecting a verdict — compatible or not, a number, permission. That expectation is what the low-quality end of this market is built to satisfy, and satisfying it requires inventing precision that does not exist. The genuine output is a map of where the work will be, which is less satisfying to receive and considerably more useful to have.
Do this next
A comparison here names where the friction is likely to sit and what to watch over the coming months. It will not produce a score, will not predict a separation, and will not read a partner who has not agreed to it.
Bazi Compatibility: What Two Charts Can Tell You reads best as a careful margin note from an experienced practitioner. Keep this method near real context, clear limits, and a next signal you can actually verify.
What you are actually asking
Most people arrive at this question from one of two places, and they need different things.
The first is curiosity. You have been together a while, someone mentioned Chinese astrology, and you want to see what it says. Any reasonable answer will do, and nothing much is riding on it.
The second is a decision. Something has been off, or the relationship is at a point where it either becomes more permanent or does not, and you are looking for an outside opinion because the people around you all have a position. That is a much heavier question wearing the same words, and the answers written for the first reader are actively unhelpful to the second.
This is written for the second one. If that is you, the most useful thing in this article is the last section, and it does not require a chart at all.
One thing to settle at the outset, because it determines whether any of this helps: are you looking to understand the relationship, or to be given permission to leave it? Both are legitimate. But if it is the second, a reading will supply whatever you brought to it, and you will have paid for your own conclusion in someone else's voice.
Why the animal pair is a twelfth of a sixteenth
Almost every compatibility result on the internet works from two animals. Rat and Horse clash, Rabbit and Dog combine, and so on down a table.
Those relationships are real. The twelve earthly branches do have defined connections — pairs that combine, pairs that sit opposite, groups of three that reinforce each other — and practitioners use them constantly. This is not folklore invented for tourists.
The problem is scope. Your animal is the branch of your year pillar: one character out of the eight in your chart. When two charts are compared there are sixteen characters in play and eight possible pillar-to-pillar pairings. The animal pair is one of them, and it is the one furthest from the person.
It is also the one shared with the most strangers. Everyone born in your year has your animal. If animal compatibility worked as advertised, one twelfth of humanity would be unable to sustain a relationship with another twelfth, which is not something anyone has observed.
So the animals are a genuine signal, read last and weighted lightly. The comparison starts somewhere else.
Where it actually starts: the day pillars
In a chart, the day column carries the person. Its top character — the day master — is the reference point the whole reading is organised around, and the branch beneath it is traditionally associated with the closest relationship, which is why it is often called the spouse position.
So a comparison begins by putting the two day pillars beside each other and asking what they do to one another. Does one produce the other, which tends to read as support that can tip into over-giving? Does one control the other, which reads as friction that is not automatically bad — plenty of stable relationships run on one person providing structure the other lacks? Are they the same element, which can read as ease and can also read as two people with the same blind spot and no correction between them?
What comes out is not a verdict but a character: this pairing tends to run this way. Support, friction, sameness, drain. None of these is a pass or fail, and reading them as such is where popular material goes wrong immediately.
After the day pillars, the month pillars matter more than most people expect, because the month carries the season and the working world — the practical texture of a life. Two charts that read well at the day level and badly at the month level often describe a couple who genuinely like each other and keep colliding over how life is organised. That is a real and common pattern, and it is invisible to any tool that only looked at the animals.
The four places friction reliably shows
This is the part of the reading with actual utility, and it is worth knowing even if you never look at a chart. Across a great many comparisons, the strain in a partnership concentrates in four areas.
Money. Not how much of it, but the instinct underneath — whether security or opportunity is the reflex. One person's prudence is the other's stagnation, and the argument is never really about the specific purchase. This is the most common location by some distance.
Family. Specifically the boundary with parents on either side: how much say they have, how much obligation is owed, whose family sets the defaults for holidays and emergencies. Couples routinely discover this only when a crisis forces it, which is the worst possible moment to negotiate it.
Living arrangements and pace. Where you live, how fast things move, how much of life is scheduled versus left open. It sounds like the least serious of the four and it produces a great deal of chronic low-grade friction, because it is present every single day.
Timing. Not compatibility between the two of you, but the periods each of you is passing through. Two people in demanding stretches at the same time will produce strain that has little to do with the pairing and would resolve on its own — and reading that strain as incompatibility is one of the more expensive mistakes available.
A good comparison tells you which of these four is likeliest to be your area. That is a genuinely actionable output, because it points at a conversation.
Combination and clash, without the drama
Two terms come up constantly and both get oversold.
Combination describes branches that pull toward each other. Read plainly it suggests ease, mutual attraction, a tendency to end up on the same side. It is generally treated as favourable and it has a shadow: a combination can also describe two people who reinforce each other's habits, including the ones neither of them should be reinforcing. Very easy is not automatically very good.
Clash describes branches that oppose each other. It reads as friction, movement, and things being unsettled — and this is where popular material becomes irresponsible, because a clash gets presented as a warning that a relationship is doomed. It is not that. A clash between two people usually means they want different things in a specific domain, and it is exactly as manageable as the two of them make it. A great many long marriages contain one. What distinguishes the ones that hold is not the absence of the clash; it is that the difference got named and negotiated rather than avoided until it hardened.
What neither term supports is a conclusion about whether to stay. Both describe a tendency in one area. Neither describes two people's willingness to do the work, and that variable is not in either chart.
The line we hold, and why
There are two requests that come up often enough to address directly.
The first is reading a partner's chart without their knowledge. We decline it, and not on ceremony. A one-sided reading of an absent person cannot be checked by anyone, reliably confirms whatever the person asking already suspected, and then gets carried into conversations as though it were evidence. It damages relationships that were not in trouble. If a relationship is worth a reading, it is worth two people agreeing to one.
The second is asking whether the relationship will end. No comparison can answer that, and the confidence with which someone answers it is a good measure of how little they are working from. An outcome that depends on two people's future choices is not visible in eight characters each. What a reading can offer is where the pressure sits and roughly when it is likely to be tested — which, if you want to affect the outcome rather than await it, is the more useful information anyway.
The ninety-day check that outranks all of it
If you take one thing from this, take this section. It requires no chart, no birth times, and no payment, and it will tell you more about a relationship than any comparison ever will.
Over the next ninety days, watch four things.
Who initiates. Not who responds warmly when contacted — who starts things. Sustained one-sided initiation is the clearest signal available, and it is the one people most often explain away.
Who arranges. Plans that get discussed and never scheduled are not plans. Someone who wants a shared life produces dates, bookings, and logistics; someone who does not produces enthusiasm.
Whether hard subjects can be raised. Money, family, the future — try one and watch what happens. Not whether you agree, whether the conversation can happen at all. A relationship where difficult topics reliably slide into humour or irritation has a structural problem no chart will fix.
Whether commitments hold. Small ones. Said they would call, and called. This is the most predictive of the four and the least dramatic.
Ninety days, four observations, all of them visible without the other person's cooperation and none requiring interpretation. If a compatibility reading and this checklist disagree, the checklist is right. It is drawn from the actual person in front of you rather than from a description of tendencies.
That is not an argument against the reading. Used well, a comparison tells you which of the four domains to watch most closely and gives you language for a conversation you have been circling. It is a good instrument for that. It is a poor instrument for deciding, and the people who sell it as one are counting on you not knowing the difference.
What Changes the Interpretation
Whether the birth hour is certain changes more of a Bazi reading than most beginners expect, and so does the season the chart was born into. Add the current luck pillar and the year, and the same structure can point in two different directions. A page worth reading names which of these it is assuming.
How to Use This Page Now
Take one thing you are actually deciding, find the part of the chart that speaks to it, and write down what you expect to see and by when. A Bazi reading earns its keep when you can go back in three months and say whether it held.
Important Limit
Bazi can inform timing, better questions, and what to watch next. It should not replace medical, legal, financial, psychological, safety, or professional advice, and it does not decide anything for you. Read it as one input with a stated limit, and let evidence you can check carry more weight than any single symbol.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bazi compatibility a percentage?
No, and any tool returning one has invented the number. There is no scoring formula in the tradition — what a practitioner produces is a description of which areas run easily and which take work. A percentage is easy to display and impossible to act on, which is roughly the opposite of what you want from this.
How much do the zodiac animals actually matter?
They are the branches of the two year pillars — one pairing out of the eight possible pairings when two charts are compared. The relationships between branches are real and practitioners use them, but a year-branch clash is regularly outweighed by what the day pillars are doing, and the day pillar is the one traditionally associated with the person and their partner.
Do we both need our birth times?
It helps and it is not required. The day pillars come from the dates, so the most important part of the comparison survives an unknown hour. What you lose is the fourth pillar on either side, which carries later life and children — a real gap, worth stating rather than guessing around.
Can this tell me whether we will divorce?
No, and a reading that offers to is doing something the method does not support. Outcomes depend on two people's future choices. What the comparison can do is name where the strain will concentrate, which is more useful, because it is the thing you can actually act on before it becomes chronic.
Can you read my partner's chart without them knowing?
We decline that, and it is worth explaining why rather than just refusing. A one-sided reading of an absent person cannot be checked, tends to confirm whatever the person asking already suspects, and gets used as evidence in conversations it should never enter. If the relationship is worth a reading, it is worth both people agreeing to it.
The reading says we clash. Should we break up?
No reading is grounds for that, and treating it as one is the failure mode this whole subject is prone to. A clash indicates an area where the two of you are likely to want different things — usually pace, money, or how much closeness is comfortable. Plenty of durable relationships contain one. What separates them is whether the difference gets discussed or gets avoided.

How it shows up
A couple gets a compatibility reading expecting a verdict and receives something narrower: the friction is likely to sit in money, specifically in different instincts about security versus opportunity. Neither of them is surprised. What changes is that a vague recurring tension now has a name, and they have the conversation about savings that they had been circling for two years. The chart did not resolve anything. It made the argument specific enough to have properly.

Signals to check
- Is the question specific enough to answer without drama?
- What condition is changing: timing, support, energy, risk, or relationship?
- Which action is small enough to test?
- When will you return to review the result?
Avoid these traps
- Do not turn one symbol into a life sentence.
- Separate chart structure from current timing and from your recent behavior.
- Prefer a grounded next step over a dramatic claim.
- Flag uncertainty when time, location, room layout, or context is incomplete.
