How do you cast a Mei Hua hexagram?

Two classical methods. By moment: add the lunar year branch, lunar month and lunar day, divide by eight for the upper trigram; add the double-hour index and divide by eight for the lower; divide the total by six for the moving line. By number: say two numbers — the first divided by eight gives the upper trigram, the second the lower, and their sum divided by six gives the moving line. An exact division takes the eighth and the sixth. This page casts both ways and shows every step.

What do Body and Use mean?

The trigram holding the moving line is the Use — the matter, the person, the environment you asked about. The other is the Body — you. Their five-element relationship shows which way force flows: Use generating Body means conditions are feeding you; Body generating Use means you are the one spending; Use controlling Body means the pressure is on you; Body controlling Use means you hold the initiative; the same element means similar rhythms, and whoever commits first decides it.

How is Mei Hua different from Liu Yao?

Liu Yao assigns six relatives, subject and object lines, and six spirits — more information, finer questions, steeper learning curve. Mei Hua reads Body against Use plus the nuclear and changed hexagrams: less information, much faster, well suited to whether to move on one thing right now and in which direction. For precise timing and named people, Liu Yao is the better instrument.

What do the nuclear and changed hexagrams show?

The nuclear hexagram is built from lines two to four and three to five of the primary, and it describes the middle of the process — what the matter runs into while it is under way. The changed hexagram flips the moving line and shows where it ends up. Read the three in sequence: primary is now, nuclear is the passage, changed is the outcome.

Can I cast the same question repeatedly?

The tradition says no. Recasting the same matter at the same stage usually means the answer already arrived and was not welcome. The more useful discipline is to cast once, write the reading down, give it a date you can check it against, and cast again only when the situation genuinely changes.

What if the cast looks bad?

Mei Hua reads the direction of force, not a verdict. Use controlling Body says pushing costs more than it returns right now — stretch the timeline, get the terms clear — not that the matter is impossible. Anyone who turns a cast into a fixed fate and then sells you a remedy for it has left the method behind.
